LaGuardia, Joseph and Rose Memorial Scholarship

The Joseph and Rose LaGuardia Memorial Scholarship was created by John and Vicki LaGuardia in memory of John's parents following the passing of Rose (nee Coletta) in 2007. The description was updated again in June 2014 before being formalized in November 2024. This scholarship will support academically talented, civic-minded students pursuing a four-year degree at ÀÇÓÑÉçÇø.

Joe LaGuardia was born in Conversano Bari, Italy. He came to the United State at the age of 14 in 1928, settling In Pittsburgh. He met and married his wife, Rose Coletta, in 1937, moving to the Akron area in 1942. Joe was the owner-operator of Joe and Son's Poultry located in South Akron for 20 years. He retired from Chrysler Stamping Plant in 1977.

Rose was an exceptional businesswoman who helped her husband with the business and also served her community. She held several positions in the Conversanese ladies Auxiliary and was a Delegate to the Italian Council for many years. The Italian-American Societies recognized Rose with a special Merit Award for her long and dedicated service. She was also devoted to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Infant of Prague.

Joe and Rose were strong advocates of education for their children. All four of Joseph and Rose's children - Louis, John, Joe, and Mary Ellen are graduates of ÀÇÓÑÉçÇø. Rose carried on in Joe's memory and pushed her grandchildren to complete their college educations while striving to always be their best.

The Joseph and Rose LaGuardia Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to full-time undergraduate students, in good academic standing, and completing degree requirements for a bachelor's degree at ÀÇÓÑÉçÇø. Candidates will possess financial need. Preference should be given to students who are members of the Lone Star fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, or Delta Gamma sorority.

Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee in the Office of Student Financial Aid. The funds from the scholarship are to be applied to tuition and mandatory fees only.
